Re: More than likely (I would say "definite") they are pirates. . . . . (Mon Dec 30 21:33:47 2002 )

This is a subject Ebay likes to "turn their cheek"
away from and you have every right to feel
"suspicious". Let's get some of this straightened
first (and also for those who may be unaware of this).
US Licensed originals will NOT have Region Free
coding and will NOT cost $20 for an entire series
on 2 DVDs (IE Evangelion retails for $170 from ADV
Films, but the ILLEGAL pirated version sells for $20).
Original Japanese DVDs are region 2 and they tend
to cost MUCH more than a US DVD. I have seen some
DVDs of a series selling for $30-40 (I don't know
what their retail price is, but that is the
average price I have seen on Yahoo Japan).

The way you can tell if you bought a pirate, if
the price is too good, then most likely you did
get a pirate. Normally the picture quality is not
as good as a licensed and let's not even mention
about the English subtitles (you need a translator
just to translate the subtitles, good GOD!).
Also, MOST mass produced PIRATED DVDs come from
Hong Kong, Malaysia, China, and Tawaiin. So if
they say "Genuine item from Malaysia", they are
basically sayin "you are buying a genuine FAKE!"
(yes, I have seen people say this and I normally
just pity the poor naive buyers who think they are
getting a real bargain).

Best thing to do is do your research first before
buying one. Look to see which company in the US
(or japan) owns the rights to the Anime and make
the seller verify that it is made in the USA.

I hope this answers your question a bit. I used
to sell for ADV Films a few months ago and will be
able to tell you a real DVD from a fake (99% of
the time at least). So if you have any specific
questions, feel free to drop me a line.
