I know there have been some threads posted on the
forum before about rilizu threads, but I thought
one specifically devoted to what people do and
don't like with maybe some value estimates might
be helpful to everyone involved. Let me explain
what I mean..
Here is my personal boat: I don't like production
drawings. Cels to me have always been half about
the aesthetic, and half about the fact it was
used in production. Now every once in a long
while a drawing that is really gorgeous will come
along that I think is pretty enough to buy, but
in general I like the colors and vibrance of a
cel. And while Riliezu cels are beautiful, and
official, they're really a step too removed from
production for me to want to pay the prices. I
consider myself a medium to high end value
collector, the prices on rilezu cels are right
around what the majority of the pieces in my
collection cost, and the same type of shots or
better.
Now it occured to me as I was looking through the
gorgeous cels on the madoka site, I found myself
saying: "if it was a production cel (which of
course don't exist for these CG anime) or came
with a production drawing, I would buy it in a
heartbeat" And saying this over 2 or 3 $250
cels.. that's a pretty big purchase even for me.
Stephen replied a while back on some rilezu
threads, so I get the impression he has some
input on the future of these items. And even if
he doesn't. maybe he knows people who do. And
the only way we as consumers can hope to get what
we want if we're not currently satisfied with
what's available (as I am not) is to let the
suppliers know what we do want, and as
importantly, how MUCH of a sales difference does
that make to us?
So my hope is on the off chance it might affect
what we're supplied with from future anime,
collectors will give the business people some
business-decision useful information.
Here's mine:
The single cel per drawing currently being done
is a must, if each cel wasn't truly unique I
wouldn't be interested.
At $100+ per cel, I'm not going to buy one unless
I -really- like it. that said, because only high
quality shots are chosen, usually about 1/7th of
the cels I see for my favorite shows are ones
that I would qualify as really liking.
Right now, without production drawings, even the
best $100 cels I am right at the point of
indifference on, and anything more than that is
almost definitely not for me. If production
drawings were included it would raise my
willingness to pay back up to production cel
level, which is to say between $150- $350
depending on my affinity for a given shot. (And
like in my production collections for truly
amazing shots- pivitol moments that were drawn
well with multiple characters from a good angel,
pivitol pan shots, etc, I might even go higher).
The cels chosen in general are nice, but I do
agree with some comments made that there would be
more shots I "must have" if full costumes could
be seen.
I really hope both to get the information out
there, and just because I'm curious what people
think, some other collectors will post their
thoughts.
