Thing is, you have two choices if you choose to
sell. Either assign prices to them, or "Accept
offers" And I can't count the number of people
active on this very forum who have stated that
they hate making offers and would rather have the
cels priced outright. Only then to turn around
and get mad when they feel the price assigned is
too high! (not those same people, but in general)
I think price inflation is coming from people
WILLING to pay the high prices for the cels, not
sellers overpricing their cels. As an example, I
bought an awesome, beautiful cel for under $50,
what I considered to be a STEAL (cel, matching
unstuck sketch and BG of a one episode only
character). I ADORED the cel and swore I'd never
part with it. When I was forced to resell it due
to financial problems, I didn't feel right about
assigning a price because what I felt for the cel
interfered with what I thought would be a fair
price. Turns out, someone offered me nearly 3
times what I paid for it. So, did I create cel
price inflation? Did I make an unfair profit on a
cel? Personally, I feel great because I knew the
cel went to a good home with a nifty member of
the cel community, but I shouldn't be chastised
because they were willing to pay the price they
did for the cel.
A friend of mine who collects anime goods agrees
with something very close to what Blair was
saying. That an overwhelming number of anime fans
expect, nay, DEMAND that everything be cheap,
easy to get, or FREE, regardless of supply and
demand or the rarity of the item in question.
I think to combatting cel inflation is truly
EDUCATING people who are new to the hobby. It
took me a long time and buying an extremely
expensive cel that I didn't love as much as
*Everyone else* loved before I learned what I
liked and how to read the market.
Unfortunately, we all act a little selfish when
it comes to cels: we dontt want to see someone
get a better deal than we can get on a cel we
want. People try to pose on here as if cel
collecting is a fun, harmless little hobby where
everyone gets along, but I've seen some behavior
that would put mothers fighting over Beanie
Babies (in their day) to shame.
