Anime Styles and Me :) (Fri Mar 22 18:41:39 2002 )

I love art. Growing up I'd watched things like
Voltron (Go Lion) and some other ones I
can't remember the names of and we all know
that's a very different style than what is out
now. When I met my husband, he was very
into Anime and he introduced me to the
Vampire Princess Miyu OVA series. I was
blown away. The older one's I'd watched did
silly things like drawing the mouth really
really huge when a character was yelling and
things like that, but Miyu had none of that.
Elegant art, great story telling and of course...
Larva. :)

I've been pretty much hooked since then.

To me, the character design is very
important--case in point, Tenchi Muyo and all
of it's changes. The first OVA's--wonderful.
The first two movies--wonderful. The third
movie--my favorite designs ever. Ryoko's
design, IMHO, is the best ever for her. Okay,
Tenchi in Tokyo? Bleh! Have you seen
what they did to Washu? The colors are
so flat and humdrum. I hate Ayeka's outfit and
Tenchi's face--it's almost like it's not even
him. I refuse to watch the show pretty much
because of the design and I will never
buy a cel from it. They sucked all the detail
out of it.

An example of a change for the better (to me
at least) is KOR. The TV show is kinda old
school and let's face it, the only one who
looked really good was Madoka. The KOR
movie however, everyone looks good! :)

My favorite anime style is not the huge-eyed
extreme of say, MKR, but rather the more
mature Cowboy Bebop. One can almost
believe someone could look like Spike. :)

Anyway, I too enjoy the "big eyes small mouth"
of Anime, but not too extreme. :)

Jen
