One of the main reasons I keep a cel gallery online
is so I can look at my own cels while I'm sitting
at the computer. However, for this purpose I could
just make a totally private gallery. I have not,
because the other reason I keep a cel gallery
online is because _I want other people to look at
it_.
This means that I need, to some extent, to cater to
_their_ choice of browser/screen resolution/etc.
Only 0.14% of my site visitors are using Netscape
6. More than 50% are running at 800x600
resolution. Heck, 12% are running Windows 95, and
no visitor has yet come by who was running any
Windows OS newer than 98.
Fortunately, it's really not at all difficult for a
cel gallery to cater to a fairly low common
denominator, while still being attractive and
functional. To take a recent example, the gallery
posted by theredhood is _gorgeous_, yet works just
fine on older browsers. (I don't hold my own
gallery up as an example; I admit to having a total
lack of artistic talent!) :-)
So, if you're making your gallery just for
yourself, I see no reason not to throw in tons of
java, specific fonts, and "advanced" HTML. But if
you want your gallery to look good (and look the
same) for all of your visitors, leave 'em out and
keep it simple. Getting Netscape and IE of _any_
version to both work the same is hard enough with
simple code!
