Actually I'd put cels on par with the comic book
artists that Litchenstein copied and put into an
entirely different context. He often just
reproduced frames of comic books and this doesn't
diminish what he did (I love him too!). However,
makes me feel bad for the pennies an hours slobs
who did the first work.
Anyway, I agree that most of these cels probably
won't be valuable in the future but who can
really tell? Maybe anime will go much more
mainstream in the future? But Tiffany lamps, etc
(just watch the Antiques Roadshow on PBS for
example) will probably always have a hefty market
because more people collect them. That's the key
-- MORE people collect them. We can see the
phenomenon today when there are more anime cel
collectors, hence higher value. As for retaining
value, I would bet those films/series that reach
a very wide audience and can outlive kitsch
faddishness will be the ones that might succeed
as a collectible. I think your list is thought-
provoking -- and this topic as well.
