I think Yann has a good point, though. I agree that the
description does seem to imply that the background is matching,
which does mislead many collectors.
When selling high-priced cels in particular, it is very
important to check as well as you can that a cel isn't fake.
If it has a background, you need to check that it is a
matching background. For example, I know of a store that has a
bunch of Card Captor Sakura cels with backgrounds. However,
they are not matching backgrounds. They aren't even from
Card Captor Sakura. Now if someone who didn't know any
Japanese was to go and buy them, and sell them as "CCS Cels
with backgrounds", a lot of people would be mislead. Maybe
it wasn't done intentionally, but it is still wrong to mislead
your customers. It's not an insult. It's merely pointing out
something that is wrong.
Mandarake (Shibuya) at the moment has two very nice Mononoke Hime
cels for sale-- a nice San with mask and spear, riding Morro,
for 600,000 Yen ($6,000 US), and a nice cel of Ashitaka for
half that, from the scene where he is showing that nut like
thing in his hand. But they could be fakes-- you never know.
For high price items such as these, it is important to check
the sources-- how the cel left the studio, to verify that
it is a real production cel, not a copy made by someone.
When buying high priced cels, you should get a guarantee of
authenticity, or personally, I would not buy it.
