I started buying cels when the first dealers/shops made it to the internet (many of them don't exist anymore) and I can tell you one thing : it was __more__ expensive than now. I don't believe what I paid for my first "average" Ryoko or El Hazard cels. People like me helped bring down the prices on internet quite a lot. If now they are raising again on some anime, it's mostly because those anime became much more popular, because the yen is very high and because prices in Japan are also raising.
