Animation in Japan are classed in three categories : TV serie : usualy 26 episodes of 28 mins per season. Broadcasted on TV and usualy of lowest quality. OAV (or OVA) : Anime released only for sale. Usualy of better quality than a TV serie. Less episodes and the length of an episode can be longer. Movie : Anime that are shown at theater. Longer than a TV episode and better quality. A serie like Tenchi Muyo has 2 TV seasons of 26 episodes, 3 movies (TMiL, Manatsu no Eve, TMiL2) and 2 OAVs series, one of 6 episodes and the other of 7. There is also a "special" which is an OAV.
