thanks for all the replies. Since i'm new to this, i'm just going
low-tech (acrylics made by a company called Aleene's which was 
recommended to me, good brushes, a permanent marker, and the transparencies (i went for the 
plain, non printable ones because i don't know what you'd use
for a ink-jet, and once again, i'm just beginning...). i'll keep 
you posted if it turns out a disaster... ^-^

As for the workshops, i'd love to go, but there aren't very many
on the East Coast...maybe i'll go to otakon...
