My silly little method of doing cels (Wed Feb 2 23:13:30 2000

Here's what I do; it's rather similar to the original process: I do a rough draft(genga) of what I'd like to do, with shading and highlighs all drawn in. Next, take a clean sheet of paper and trace it. I only trace the lines that I'd want to have be black lines on the cel. I don't have any of the special ink studios use when they do the hanken cels, so I scan the tracing as line art, clean it up a little in Photoshop(get rid of the edges, any blemishes or do any alterations I want) then I print the image onto a transparency with a laser printer. Then I just paint stuff on. Some people use xerox machines. I have a bunch of acrylic paints from a painting class. There's a product called "flo-ease" from Golden that allows for you to make the paints less viscous without breaking the binder(what holds the paint together.) I did a cel using this method for my friend's birthday. She loved it, the colors are bright, the lines are crisp, and the whole piece is rather durable. |
