If you use your fanart to print a poster at 10'000 copies
and start selling them, they would probably start to
care...

Legaly, selling your fanart (even showing it in public)
is illegal and violate the copyright. But as long as
it doesn't hurt the image of the company holding the
copyright and as long as it's not becoming a real
business, they probably won't say anything...

But before you start to draw picture of an anime
to resell them on a regular basis (even if it's
at one copy each), I would ask the copyright
holder.... BStS !  (Better Safe than Sorry)
