I think the law here is fuzzier than you realize. The
internet is a different universe and our laws have yet to
catch up to it.
For instance, when you take an image off someone else's
web site, you're not actually taking the original image
itself...you're making a copy! The original image remains
on the web site!
Yann, you use the example of a photocopy. Well, I am, in a
sense,
making an exact photocopy of your cel scan when I download
it to my hard drive. I'm not taking the original scan OFF
your web site. It's still there! So, do I OWN my copy of
your cel scan?
What if I modify the image just slightly. Perhaps
compress it a bit more? Do I OWN that now?
Perhaps the law has some answers for us, but the situation
is very fuzzy and open to interpretation. I am sure there
will be many legal battles fought over internet copyright
issues in the years to come.
