According to the fall issue of AnimeFantastique
"In terms of numbers of scenes in Mononoke an 
overwhelming percentage were painted on cels and 
photographed on film. In the end about 150 scenes 
were digitally produced and this is less than 10%
of the entire film. (MH has about 1,600 scenes total)
.....Toward the end of production,, it was found that
there was insufficent manpower to paint the last 5,000
cels. To make the deadline, Ghibli drafted animators
who had finished their jobs to paint the remainder 
digitally..." So you won't be seeing those 5,000
cels any time soon.
