I have a rather bad scanner, but you can 
compensate for a bad scanner by scanning at a 
high dpi and then shrink.  For my scans, I scan 
at 600dpi and then shrink to the size I want.  
Granted, this would be kinda slow if you don't 
have a lot of memory.
