I have a male friend who loves Cardcaptor Sakura, 
which is a "girl anime".  He is straight as 
straight can be. 

He is absolutely butt-crazy in love with Sakura 
and Tomoyo.

So, added to my previous message, who is to say 
that a male viewer might not just LIKE the 
characters themselves?  That collector you're 
laughing so hard at might be collecting Sailor 
Moon cels because he thinks the main characters 
are pretty/cute.
