Being an X collector I don't think all X 
collectors collect for the pretty artwork. I 
collect cels from the X movie because I love the 
movie. I saw it totally independently of reading 
the mangas and I loved it. Sure it isn't as good 
as the manga or the tv series in comparission 
but, it's still beautiful as a stand alone piece. 
I don't think I'd be willing to spend thousands 
trying to grow my X collection if I only thought 
the movie was so/so.

Though all that being said I must admidt I am 
CLAMP whore, and I've spent far too much on 
pretty cels from Miyuki-Chan in wonderland for 
just that reason.
