The last long flame war, lots of people were
complaining about how lots of subs don't get
shown in cons because they're already bought up
by american companies etc. I thought I'd point
out to those who weren't aware, but the digital
fansub movement has really picked up lately.
When Inu Yasha eps first came out, I could get
them subtitled and in really good quality less
than a week after they were originally shown in
Japan. It's the same for a lot of other new
anime releases now, and for the most part these
are all really good translations; lots of them
have very clear fonts, and little cultural notes
at the top.

Of course there's the usual piracy going on of
titles already released by US companies, but if
you have moral objections to those, just don't
download them. There's still bunches of fansubs
you can sample before they're available to be
distributed on tape through fansub networks, if
you can even find them there at all.
