Since humidity can cause so many problems with
cels, I decided to fight the problem at the
source. If I cant seal up the cels from the
humidity, why not just eliminate the humidity
from the surrounding atmosphere? The picture you
see here is my current cel protection setup, with
the cels in polypropelene sheet protectors, which
are inside a Pratt archival art book, which I
keep inside an art portfolio case, (Its under the
cel book), which hangs inside a dark closet.
Anyways, my super solution is that strange white
bag you see on the left. It is a massive silica
packet, aka: dessicant pouch. Its quite big,
(about 1 pound!) and is used for keeping the
inside of fireplaces dry during shipping when
new.
Since my cel case tends to confine the cel book
from the outside atmosphere pretty well, Im
asuming that putting this big silica pouch inside
my cel case will reduce the humidity levels quite
a bit. However, has anyone else ever tried this
before? Im not sure if the silica pack will harm
the cels. Since these packs are typically used in
many products today, (Incuding food) I assume
that it will be ok. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
