In my opinion, Dragonball cels in particular
Mirai Trunks, Vegita,"Fusion", and SS Gohan 2
cels are hot items. The prices just reflect the
short supply and the large demand that is going
on right now. Dragonball Z is a very popular
anime and is getting increasingly so, at the same
time many collectors have taken a lot of
the "prime" cels that have been on the market.
But more and more people have decided to want to
collect these cels. I would not be at all
surprised to see the prices of them go even
higher. What is strange to me is that people are
so shocked by it. But if an Evangelion, Lodoss,
Miyazaki, or AMG cel goes for such a price no one
seems to think that is strange, although it could
be argued that the mass market appeal for those
series is not as high as Dragonball Z or GT. Of
course it could be stated that they are high
because of their rarity, and the anime character
design is more intricate or sophisticated, but
the same argument could be made for a DB Gojita,
Vegitto, Broly, or Mirai Trunks cel. Dragonball
was a very long series, so there appears to be
an "endless supply" of cels, but the reality is
that is not so, especially when you consider the
rare cels and great characters that have had only
short appearances, given the totality of the
series. Although, Son Goku is the ultimate hero
of the Dragonball series, in the States he is not
the most highly sought after (not yet anyway)
since he appears in almost every single episode,
his cels will be the most plentiful and the
easiest to acquire. Thus, his collecting appeal
and price (high supply) have tend suppress the
pricing of his cels, except when he changes forms
(i.e, SS2,3,4,etc.)Although Vegita, tends to be
the wild card in all of this. He appears quite
often, In many different forms, and yet his fan
base is larger than the actual hero of the series
(at least in the USA). So, again, in my opinion
upon close inspection, the cel that is being
offered (Trunks)although now seen as expensive by
some, may actually be set at a reasonable price
given the popularity and the rarity of the
appearance of the character in the series. I
however, am not a strong fan of this particular
character. But, at the same time if someone is
bound to make some money by selling what he owns--
more power to him/her after all it is their free
choice to do so. You have the choice to say no
it's too much, no matter how much you may want
it. And many times, things don't get sold (not
the first time anyway!) |
