I used to frame all my cels at one time (several
years ago). I took great care with archival
materials and UV-resistant glass, and hung the
cels in an alcove of a darkly lit room where they
were exposed to no sunlight and little or no
artificial light (and *no* fluorescent light). It
was nice to have the entire collection up on
display, and it definitely was a conversation
piece. However, after a few months, I noticed
some browning of the trace lines; and after a
year, a lot of lines were completely faded.
Of course, we're talking about Toei cels here
(which are notorious for cheap ink and line
fading), but I have noticed that the cels kept in
my cel books are much better preserved. This was
a noticeable difference, so now I only keep two or
three cels up and the rest (including the most
valuable favorites of my collection) tucked away
in cel books.
Has anyone else with experience in framing had the
same problems? I don't know if it's only Toei
cels but I would be afraid to take the chance!
