Some online shops will hold periodic sales and/or
drop prices on things that are slow to move. Some
will not - their prices are what they are no
matter what. But if the cel has been sitting
there a decent amount of time (as in four or five
months or more), you might consider writing to
the dealer with an offer. It's best if you know
that particular shop decently well, but even if
you don't, it really doesn't hurt to ask.
Another thing is that some shops will allow a bit
of a discount if you order a number of things at
once - especially things that have been sitting
there as opposed to something posted new - but
this type of "bulk discount" (lack of a better
term) usually is only accepted if your order is
at least in the few hundred dollar range. . .
Once again, it depends on the shop and the people
running it.
Keep in mind also, the more expensive the cel,
the more capital the dealer has tied up in it. If
a dealer posts a $5000 Mononoke cel up on their
site and no one buys it, that cel is basically
$5000 of capital that they otherwise *could* be
using to make more money (by using it to buy more
cels to sell). The longer it sits there, the more
the dealer "loses out". That is why many smaller
dealers don't like risking bringing in the big
ticket cels - if the cel sells they might make a
nice profit, but if it doesn't, they could be in
trouble.
One last thing you might want to keep in mind is
what seems to be the particular store's markup.
Many will mark up everything by a decently
predictable amount. If you know the store well
enough to guess that amount, you can
approximately guess what they might have actually
paid for the cel. (And thus, not undercut it -
since a store can't resonably sell for less than
aquisition costs.)
