Poll: Cel Collecting Ethics (Wed Nov 15 09:33:24 2000 )
Curious

Forgive me for the anonymous post, but I don't
feel comfortable giving my name in the context of
this message, but I really do want people's
opinions of the subject.

The posts above in the "Don't you just HATE"
thread really concern me. I buy cels on Yahoo
Japan and elsewhere, and do resell some of them on
Ebay from time to time.
I love buying cels. I love to get them and hold
them in my hand. Sometimes I buy groups of cels to
get just one cel that I really wanted. It isn't
the cheapest way to go, but if 'your' cel is in
that group, you want them all. Sometimes sellers
put two cels in one group, sometimes a lot more.
In this case I always say to myself "Well, I can
sell this one on ebay and make back some of the
money".
When the cels get here, then it is a question of
if I can let the other cel(s) go or not...but that
is another story! :-)

I don't have unlimited funds like so many people
on this forum seem to have. I have to sell
something to buy something new, so I try to only
keep the ones I just can't part with. I assume
someone else out there would want the ones I am
selling more than me, so I feel right about
selling them. But now all of a sudden, I feel like
the scum of the earth for buying a cel when I am
planning to sell it, even if that was the only way
I could get the cel I wanted.

I saw the auctions that Kenshinlvr is concerned
about. I also saw the original auctions on Yahoo
Japan. Those were from two groups of cels iirc,
and I think the total was over 20 cels all
together. I would not have kept them all if I had
won them! I wouldn't have thought I had to! But
the way this seller is being trashed, without
anyone even knowing if it is a dealer who hoped he
could make a bit of money on them (is this bad?),
or if they are a collector who didn't want to keep
every cel in the group (is this bad?), is very
disheartening. It makes me not want to sell my
cels that I don't want to keep, because I don't
want my name on this forum as a person who is
greedy or needs to be punished by God. (I know
that was a joke, but ouch!)

I have some cels that I will never sell, and
others that I really should sell, because I don't
love them as much as the others and can make back
some money to buy another cel. It is the thrill of
finding it, and getting it. And if I couldn't sell
some of them, my hobby is over. I really want to
know if it is such a bad thing.

I have never been chastized for selling any of my
cels, but now I wonder if it is just a matter of
time. I don't ask higher prices, just what I paid
for them, and if I get one bid, then I am happy to
have that money back to use again. If I get a
profit, that is great. Am I so different than you
guys? Is it a perception of a certain type of
person, one who buys and sells to make a profit,
but is not in what you feel is the "cel dealer"
catagory that people attack? Are you angry at
dealers who buy on Yahoo Japan because you feel
that the only place that is legitimate to buy from
is a cel shop in Japan? What about people who sell
occasionally to get back "cel money" or sell the
cels they feel are not the ones they love the
most once they have them?

I just would really be interested in your
comments. I want to know where the lines are drawn
in this hobby, and how they are defined. I am sure
that there are a lot of us who would be interested
to know what is NOT resented, because I know I am
not alone in looking at the hobby as a constantly
changing collection, with the ability to sell the
ones we don't want anymore, or never wanted, as a
way to keep being able to continue collecting. At
least I don't think I am alone!
