Escaflowne is one of those weird animes to come out.
The series was never really hugely popular in Japan and
I'm not sure of its popularity in the U.S. Definitely wasn't
or isn't on par with Dragonball Z or Tenchi Muyo in 
popularity.

Escaflowne was originally aired at night and its target 
audience was teens to young adults, I would guess. There
wasn't a lot of merchandising for it when it was originally
released, either here or Japan. 

Yet with all of this, nice cels of Escaflowne of even main
characters will go as high or higher than rare characters
from Sailor Moon and others. (The prices aren't there with
Lodoss War yet!)
