"I just try not to worry about it too much and
hope one day the companies can do something."
They can, though currently only ADV Films and
Bandai have dedicated anti-piracy squads. Bandai
seized a whole ton of illicit Gundam gear at SDCC
a few weeks ago, and were distributing flyers
with the "we will take it if it's not legit"
message at Otakon. I am looking forward to ADV's
domestic release of anime soundtracks, because it
means they'll have the ammo to start seizing and
destroying Ever Anime and SM crap. Man, the
amount of times I've wanted to walk through Anime
Crash with a baseball bat...
Sadly, not enough companies are being as agressive
as they should be--auctions of fansubs/vcds
(including fansubs/vcds of stuff licensed and
available in the US) turn up all the time, and a
recent survey of eBay resulted in lots of "oh,
whoop de doo, you live near a printing bureau"
level of craptacular merch--badly printed
t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc. What's really awful
is these icky, icky shirts I keep seeing in mall
stores, these button-up ones with
distorted/misprinted anime characters on 'em.
Worst of it is misguided fans who think these are
somehow legit or neat little things instead of
what they really are: stolen property. Just
terrible, and I hope these crooks get shut down
and fast for that kinda crap. |
