a back lighted cel is one where the black paint is added to 
the cel so that when it is photographed the area that is 
painted black is then not exposed on the film itself... 

then they take a carboard cut out that covers the entire 
cel except for that black painted spot and they show a 
light through the hole... thus the term backlight. 

This is used for special effects like the way Tenchi's 
sword is glowing and has a tendancey to be very bright.
