Personally, I really don't mind if people use the images that
I have made of my sale items as long as they put them on their
own server. I have had some people ask and others just take,
but I really don't care, as those items are for sale anyway.
What bothers me is when people use my modified images that I
have as decor on my sales pages and the images of my own
personal collection on my personal webpages. It bothers me for
the same reasons that you mentioned; the hard work. But I also
want to include uniquness in this case; I want my pages to be
unique, that's why I make my own images. There are so many
clone pages out there, where the lack of the creators' imagination
prompts them to use other people's ideas.
I make anime animations of images that I've scanned from
some of my cels and on several occasions I have seen MY
animations on other people's pages. These people have not asked
me wheather they may use them and they have not given me credit.
Now I know that some people are going to throw copyright laws
at me, perhaps they are within their right, but I am still the
one that scanned, animated and put several hours into each image
to perfect it.
If anyone wants something specially animated for their site, just
ask! I will make it for you when I have time! Free!!!
All I ask in return is a little bit of credit.

poster said really hit home. Plus there's that discussion going
on on the Cel Mailing List about some eBay rookie selling cels that
are not his, using images that are not his, ripping people off, etc...
