Hello,
No, you don't need a transparency adaptor. Try to take
a flatbed scanner if you can as it's much better and
easier to use than hand scanners... Also don't take
something where you have to pass the document through :
I wouldn't try that with a cel :)

Now, if you want my advice on which scanner to buy :
Take an HP ! Don't take a cheap scanner (especialy as
HP or Epson aren't much more expensive) just because
they claim incredible high resolution : You won't need
it anyway and the softwares that comes with the scanner
are generaly crap. And that's very very important ! If 
there isn't good software, the scanner is totaly useless...
