Obviously, copying the codes of someone else web pages is illegal ! Now, not everything is copyrighted : It depend of the complexity. I can't claim a copyright on a "while(1) {}" loops but I certainly can for a javascript program that would display some scrolling text. Also, the copyright notice that come with a program may give you extanded rights. For example, the bandwidth module I wrote for Apache is under the GNU public domain license. That mean that anyone can take it, modify it, use it. But they are not allowed to charge other people for using it and they are not allowed to change the license. (So a vendor could make his own version of Apache including it and sell that version. But it doesn't have the right to charge specificaly for that module and he hasn't the right to remove/change my copyright). (Apache has also this own license so vendors can't change for it either).
