My sort of question! I definitely like to frame
my cels - in fact one of the things I ask myself
before I buy the majority of my cels is: Would I
ever want to frame that? ... I've only gotten
around to framing 6 of my cels, but there's the
potential for more to come. :) I just think it'd
be a shame to have this wonderful collection and
to not display any of it.
I used to work as a framer, so I do it myself
because I vaguely know what I'm doing. I wouldn't
trust anyone with one of my cels, no matter how
cheap it was. Even if they knew better then to
trim the cel or anything, that doesn't mean they
would use gloves when handling it or not leaving
it lying around where glass shards could get on
it or something else could happen to it.
I go to local framing stores and also online
(americanframe.com) and get them to take care of
cutting everything I need. Then I basically
assemble it. I just make sure I pick out
completely acid-free/conservation things, use UV
glass, and use acid-free framer's tape when
putting it together. I also only handle my cels
with cotton gloves.
Oh and below is my latest framing job (plus some
others in the background)! It's absolutely
massive. I actually had to do something special
with this one because I had a fillet. A fillet is
like a mini wooden frame that goes on the inside
edge of the mat. Unfortunately, fillets and wood
frames give off acid. One of the purposes of a
mat is to protect the artwork from the frame. But
with a fillet - it's right there on top of your
artwork. So I bought a sheet of protective
acetate and laid it over my cel. I'll have to
change the acetate every so often, but then
you're supposed to change mats and glass every so
often too.
