Wow, that must have been either a long time ago or
when I was not collecting for a while. 

I really can't remember if he held his staff
horizontally or not but it does sound familiar.  I
just remember him taking that fellow down with his
staff without much effort on his part, I guess
that is what made the scene look so cool to me.
