Yo, after seeing "Reloaded" (jeez, don't get me 
started on that), I can't say enough GOOD things 
about the "Animatrix" DVD; it was totally 
AWESOME!!! As much as I liked all the short films 
(esp. World Record and Beyond), the extras were 
even better!  The short on the origins of anime 
is a must for all cel collecters!  Also, to 
answer this post, in the director commentaries, 
one director definetely references that he opted 
to use the hand-painted method over CG (I think 
it's in the "World Record" episode).
