I would never do that to one of my cels. That
wouldn't protect them from anything. First, I
doubt the laminate stuff he's using is acid free
since I've never seen any laminate that doesn't
turn yellow with age. Second, it's not going to
prevent against light damage because it's not UV
protective. Third, it's not going to prevent
creases since thin laminated items can still be
bent and folded. Fourth, it's not even waterproof
to any real extent.
Lastly, and probably most important, is that
laminating something is cheap and definitely NOT
permanant. I worked in a library and know first
hand how laminated things eventually form bubbles
under the lamination when it begins to separate
from the item. Once this happens, it's impossible
to remove the lamination without damaging the
item. Keep in mind that what I've seen are
laminated newspaper clippings, which wouldn't
have the added problem of *paint* on the back
that will stick to the lamination, even once the
stuff is coming back off the rest of the cel.
What a horrible mess!! The first thing I would
say to him would be to STOP. He's not doing the
cels any good. . . and probably making them
worthless for any resale. I know I wouldn't want
a cel that had been laminated. Even if it were an
absolute top wishlist cel to the point that I
would consider buying, I would expect a HUGE
discount on the cel's potential price.
