There was a post about fake cels yesterday that I
responded to with some info, check that first in
case you haven't.
Fake cels aren't as common as people think.
Typically the cels that get copied the most are
hanken cels, eva, miyazaki and amg. For some
series (like amg) there were repro cels made by
the studios and released to the public in large
numbers. In the case of the amg cels the only
thing done to these cels was a number put in the
upper right corner, besides that they look the
same as the production ones (and were made by the
same production staff as well).
Like I mentioned in the previous post, just
because a cel doesn't have sequence numbers or
registration holes doesn't mean its fake, and
conversely the same is true. Real cels can have
the registration holes cut off for a number of
reasons, and its just as easy for a forger to
write the numbers in the corner of a fake cel to
pass it off as real.
Without seeing the cel in question no one is
really going to be able to give much better of an
evaluation. Typically forgers go for higher
priced cels ($500 or more). Its not worth their
time to try and pass off a fake DB cel worth $100
when with the same time and effort they can pawn
a $1000 Eva cel on someone.
When I get the time (hopefully this weekend) I'll
add some info that I've accumulated on fake cels
to my webpage, along with some fake cels that
I've come across.
