I have 11 cels framed, all professionally done.
Three of our Secret of NIMH cels were done
by the gallery my husband and I bought them
from, but the others were all by framers
chosen by me. If you live in the San Jose
area, I can recommend a framer to you. I
have been lately thinking of purchasing a
mat cutter and doing it myself, but I think
that's a ways off. I like going with a pro framer
because it's great to get someone else's
input on what mats would compliment the
cel. My framer has come up with combos I
never would have thought of that make the
cel look fantastic. Also, one can choose from
a wider range of frame mouldings than
would be available ready-made at say
Wal Mart or a craft store.
What you can do if you like is have the framer
make the frame only and do the rest yourself.
Usually the moulding is the most expensive,
so I'm not sure how much you would save
going that route.
$300 for 3 cels actually isn't too bad once you
consider the need for archival materials to
preserve your cel as much as possible. Why
is the good stuff always so much more
expensive? :) All of the cels I've had framed
have cost inbetween $150-$200.
When I choose to have a cel framed, I pick out
one that I like (naturally) and has a really
great pose, action or facial expression. Trust
your gut on this. :) Pick the cel that makes
you go "Oooohhh" every time you see it. :)
If your mom is all about having you frame
some of your cels, have her chip in for the
cost! :) Good luck on your cel framing
adventure! :)
