I'd say the exact opposite.  I collected trading 
cards (domestic US cards) long before I got into 
anime.  And then I started collecting anime 
cards.  And shitajiki are like really BIG trading 
cards, so I started collecting them.  And cels 
are flat like cards and they also have cute anime 
pictures on them, right?  So they fit into my 
collecting habits just perfectly.  Of course, I 
still collect cards and shitajiki.  ^^  In fact, 
I got some really cute Conan cards and really 
spiffy One Piece and Hikaru no Go shitajiki the 
other day.
