Here is an example of backlighting. I would
classify it as a type of special effect. (I don't
know what it could be classified as otherwise.)
It's when a cel is lit from behind as it's being
filmed. When this is done, the painters have to
add a layer of thick black paint to the entire
back of the image on the cel (so that the light
doesn't shine through where it shouldn't). This
paint is pretty obvious the first time you see
it, it has a different type of shine to it and it
will happily stick to everything in sight,
including your dog. ^_^;;
I've been told that a lot of backlit cels are not
filmed with backgrounds. I'm not completely sure
if this is the case, but as you can see in the
screen capture - there doesn't appear to be a
background of any kind. But I have seen backlit
scenes where it looks like some kind of *partial*
background was used. Like cutouts used to create
a shawdowing effect in the light around the
image. But of course, now I'll be darned if I can
remember the location of even one good example.
