This isn't anime, but it is a really wierd cel!
I've never seen an image before painted in this
way and was wondering if there was a correct
terminology to use to describe this "special
effect". Also, if anyone else has cels painted
this way I'd love to see them! Show me! ^_^
From a TV commercial in 1985: The wings are
actually painted twice! First on the true cel
layer, the base colours have been painted on just
like any normal cel. The oddity though is that on
top of the normal paint, a 2nd cel layer has been
trimmed and pasted onto the real cel. This 2nd
feathery layer is painted on a "frosted" cel so
you can still see the original paint colours
underneath. There's a lot of coloured pencil work
on this 2nd layer as well.
On top of this wing detail, every single line on
the cel has also been hand inked. It really
reminds me of the fantastic work that goes in to
the Last Unicorn cels you see floating around.
A scan at 200% size of the face and wingpaint can
be seen if you're really curious and want to
click the link at the top. ^^
