It's about the modern art market, but touches on
a lot of the same issues as the anime cel market -
- suchas the difference in prices between
galleries and auctions. Not surprisingly, people
pay up to 50X more for things in auctions, than
they would if they bought them in a gallery. This
has lead to people being blacklisted form
purchasing things, because of their habit of
turning around and selling pieces in auctions.
(Sounds farmilar, doesn't it :) .)
As one gallery owner says about auction houses:

". . . (T)he auction house is to sell what's in
demand, which is changing all of the time."

I thought this makes sense. Of course prices are
going to be high for the thing is in demand. The
only question is whether they will stay there,
when the market cools. Time will tell.
