I was thinking Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke. 
He's strong, courageous, he sees both sides of the 
issue. He also is willing to sacrifice himself for 
the people. He's not too shabby with a bow and 
arrow either.

Then there's Ranma. He would certainly have an 
experienced opinion on gender issues.

Tamahome?(Too much of a shyster.) Van from 
Escaflowne? (Too hotheaded.) How about Tenchi's 
granddad? He's very levelheaded and experienced.

Hmmm.
