Have seen a few Transformer cels on eBay and at conventions. (Mon Jan 15 14:23:58 2001 )

Been SPAMMED to death here 8(!

Dear DJ,

Hi, well I have seen a few Transformer MODEL cels
for sale on eBay, but they were mostly from the
"after Optimus Prime died in the movie" era. They
were pretty cheap at about $10.00 each. I have
also seen those same model cels on sale at a
Transformers convention (Botcon) for $100.00 each
@_@! A few galleries, like Van Eaton, had a few
of those model cels as well, but I don't think
they have any left 8(.

Actually, ANY cels from those Hasbro/Sunbow 80s
shows are EXTREMELY hard to find (Jem,
Transformers, My Little Pony, G.I. Joe, etc.).
Hasbro/Sunbow's later shows (Conan, My Little Pony
Friends, etc.) cels are a little easier to find.
You can check out Legacy Animation for those cels:

http://www.legacy-animation.com

I've heard a possible explanation for the lack of
cels from these Hasbro/Sunbow shows. One cel art
dealer told me that because Hasbro/Sunbow does NOT
have a distributor for their cels, it was and is
difficult to obtain cels from these shows. Most
likely, cels from these shows were destroyed or
discarded at the end of the production since they
didn't have an outlet or distributor to take them
and market them. The few cels that do exist from
these shows are in the hands of people who worked
on the show itself, and if you are lucky, some
might go into the secondary cel market (i.e.
animation art galleries, eBay, etc.).

A batch of cels from these shows even ended up at
Toys 'R Us at one point! According to people who
remember this, cels from shows like Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles, Jem, and several other 80s mass
produced shows were at one time sold at Toys 'R Us
in plastic bags for only $10.00-$15.00 each o_O!
They have LONG been gone from Toys 'R Us now
though!

My suggestion is to keep checking in with
animation art galleries that have had any of these
shows in the past like:

Van Eaton gallery
http://www.vegalleries.com

Art-Toons
ArtToonsart@aol.com

and of course eBay =6. I have also heard that
Los Angeles animation art galleries might have
some hidden in their stock somewhere o_O, so ASK
around! You never know when one will turn up! I
remember that once anime-cel.com found a G.I. Joe
cel of Scarlet through their rummagings in Japan
@_@ which they auctioned off on eBay.

Whew! Okay, I hope this information helps a
little! Remember, keep searching and asking, and
maybe one will turn up!

Sincerely,

Sonia
