This question has caused me much pondering as 

well!  First off, I think it is a asthetic 

reason.  Anime characters without bangs often 

look deformed more often than characters 

without bangs.  It's probably a combination 

of the large eyes and un-covered forehead.  

Because real people's eyes aren't that big, 

it messes up proportions (and bangs sorta 

help hide that).  Also, the bangs give the 

face a little more interest and break up the 

otherwise Big-Pinkish-Oval of a face.



Secondly, just a lot of girls in Japan have 

bangs!  If you look at Japanese cosplayers 

(not wearing wigs) I don't think you'll find 

more than 1-in-100 without bangs.  I suppose 

it's just a fashion thing.  (Everyone I know 

in Japan has bangs, too o.O;;)  Personally, I 

HATED my bangs, and went through the agony of 

growing them out 8 years ago (and I'll NEVER 

get them again) ^_^;;  It's a bit of a 

problem when cosplaying, so I've Developed 

Fake Bangs on an Elastic Band ^^;;  My 

friends think it's the funniest thing...
