From what I have heard Clamp didn't even know
themselves until the last moment whether Ashura
was going to be male or female.
And, from my interpretation of the manga,
Ashura is an 'it'. Genetically male, but IMO
even grown up he doesn't look like he reached
puberty and I don't think he ever will.
I see it as part of the continuation of the
fact that King Ashura will never have descendants.
Just my 2 cents. :)
