In Japan, Shogakukan (the studio who's making the Pokemon
anime) doesn't release Pokemon cels publicly in Japan. The
ones that are floating around on the market are the stolen
ones. There're some licensing issues between Nintendo and
Shogakukan on cels, so right now, it's rather good to lock
them up in the warehouse than letting them out to the fans.
Large anime studios with high budgets will gradually
switch into all digital compositing in the next few years.
Smaller anime studios will take longer time to be able to
afford equipments and spend time to train their staffs.
One problem about Japanese anime studios are many of the old
production people are old-time staffs which they
have been doing hand-painted cel production for so many
years, it's just hard for them to switch into computers all
of a sudden. So it will take a long while for them to
adapt it. Old animators are okay in this transition process
because they still have to draw on papers, then the drawings
will scan into the computers.
I guess in about 10 years, hand-painted cel production
will fade out eventually. |
