of the main cities. List of hotels and how to reserve.
Train time-table (anyone managed to understand them ??),
subway maps and so...

There isn't a Hitch Hiker guide to Japan (I think)
so you will have to fall back on the "Lonely Planet"
or Berlitz (depend how many pages you fell up to read).
If you read french, I liked the "Guides Visa".
