Opening cels are often of higher quality than regular
cels. Since it's something that is shown repeatedly (at the
start of a show), they are usually more careful and spend
more time when drawing and painting these cels. They tend
to use fewer layers, sometimes painting it all on one cel,
since the more layers you use, the darker the layers below
and the background get.
And of course, as mentioned, that fact that the cel is
practically instantly recognizable by anyone who has seen
the series makes it highly desired.
It seems that not many opening cels make their way out
of Japan.
