[[[         what I've learned, Japanese like more cutesy characters.  
[[[         (AMG, Rei, etc.)  but in American culture, we like more
[[[         "bad ass" girls.  (Ryoko, Lina Inverse, BGC, Asuka, etc.)
[[[         At least thats the trend I've seen...I could be wrong.

I think that's more just you Nick than America ^_^.  I know 
_plenty_ of fans of Belldandy in the US.  There are also
the US fans of Kasumi from Ranma.  There are also plenty of
US fans who feels sorry for Asuka by the end of the series
but still can't forgive her for the beginning.  Nekoi Yuzuriha
is one of the more expensive characters from X to get.  Also, there
are plenty of Nene fans, and while a very important member 
of the Knight Sabres, I never thought of her as a "bad ass."
Just think, those Goddess cels, those Achika cels, those 
Kasumi cels, those Kiki cels...all very expensive ^_^.
