You must be mistaken in your number or have a realy strange bank : Wire transfer have always a better rate than buying banknotes. The bank buys banknote at a low rate. Then it buys currency at a slightly higher rate. Then it sells currency at a higher rate. And finaly it sells banknote at a still higher rate. Ie: |- Selling banknote | |- Selling currency (electronic transaction) | |- Buying currency (electronic transaction) | |- Buying banknote - And yes, the yen is currently very high at around $1 = 100 yen.
